River Avon
Salisbury & District Angling Club
Anyone who has looked at the River Wye or the WUF webcam recently will have been as glum as me. The river is high and there is more rain predicted. After the last spate of high water the river fell slowly, as little as an inch a day, so my hopes of fishing any time soon were slim. What to do?
I headed for the chalkstreams. The River Avon is beautiful thing. And more than that, it is less prone to flooding. So I found myself for two hours this Friday afternoon plying a lovely beat in search of some sport and a trout for supper. Both were forthcoming.
In addition to the fishing, there was a close encounter with a kingfisher. This is the first one I've seen on this beat and is perhaps a new visitor. Kingfishers disperse after nesting, with this year's birds looking for a place of their own. There were plenty of small brown and black caddis hatching off along with some very tardy mayfly duns. Even under leaden skies such sights were a delight.
